This is the full-sized Large version that is extremely hard to find, and very low in production numbers. If you are looking at this, you’ll probably know that the Tank is one of the most, if not the most, iconic designs from the house of Cartier. It is one of those watches that is absolutely unmistakeable when you see it on the wrist, and will not be confused with anything else. The Tank Must Solarbeat was released in 2021. It is a stainless-steel quartz Cartier, with the Roman numerals doubling up as solar panels. Where some of its sibling watches tend toward the more ornate, the Tank is quintessential elegance. The simplicity stems from its clean design and minimal steel case. The case measures 33.7mm by 25.5mm, and there is no date window. The classic look of a Cartier Tank is that of a white dial with Roman numerals, the Cartier secret signature at 10 o’clock, blued sword hands and an octagonal crown with a blue cabochon. The Solarbeat movement is an innovation by the Cartier Manufacture in La Chaux-de-Fonds. More than simply a production site, the Manufacture is a research hub, a creative and innovative laboratory that has succeeded in applying the photovoltaic principle to the Tank watch’s dial, without altering its aesthetic. A true technical feat that relies on the delicate and invisible perforation of Roman numerals, whose openings allow solar energy to reach the photovoltaic cells hidden under the dial. It took two years for the development team to integrate this movement, with an average lifespan of 16 years, into the Tank Must, the first watch to benefit from this technology.
